We've got to be smarter than cats Last night while traveling on a small two lane road, I was going about 45mph when I saw a cat from the left run out in front of me. I reacted by hitting the brakes to avoid hitting the cat. (Although I admit, I've never really like cats. :) ) Anyway, the cat was all the way across the street, within inches of the safety of the dirt shoulder, when it saw me and decided to turn around and race back across the street from where it came. However, there was now another vehicle coming in that lane and I'm sure the driver didn't see the cat. Once again, the cat had almost made it all the way back across the street, when it saw the approaching vehicle. Instead of continuing across the street, it turned away from the oncoming vehicle, in the direction of travel and tried to outrun the hazard. I immediately thought, "This is a perfect illustration of what may of us are doing in the 'patriot' community right now." First: The cat had made it almost all the way across the street when it ran in front of me. I had stopped in time and the cat was within inches of the edge of the street and safety. But when it saw me, it felt threatened, and did not assess the threat accurately. So it turned and ran back from where it started. Mistake number one. Second: After the cat had turned and was returning to it's side of the street, it was again almost there, but again, it saw a threat and instead of just taking a few more steps to evade the threat completely, it turned to a path in the direction of the threat and tried to run away from it. Mistake number two. Cat's can't out run cars. Thus the moral of the story, many of us are "almost there" to freedom many times. But we see the great big monster, we are intimidated and do not accurately assess the threat. So we turn tail and run. Second moral of the story: If you have the opportunity to simply "side step" the threat, sometimes that's the best course of action. But one thing is sure, don't turn tail and run in the direction of the pursuer. You aren't going to out run them. They are too big and too well funded. So sometimes it's best to just step aside and let the monster by. We've got to be smarter than cats!
